Bloating

Gas vs. Bloating: What’s the Difference?

Gas is a physical substance in the GI tract; bloating is a sensation of fullness or pressure, sometimes with visible distention. You can have one without the other.

What intestinal gas is

Gas comes from swallowed air and microbial fermentation. Passing gas is normal physiology. The amount and perceived discomfort vary widely.

What bloating is

Bloating is subjective fullness, pressure or swelling. It can relate to gas, constipation, gut sensitivity, food patterns and other factors.

Why the distinction matters

If a product promises to “eliminate bloating” by reducing gas, it may be addressing only one possible mechanism. Good symptom tracking can clarify whether bowel movements, meals or specific foods change the pattern.
