Constipation and Bloating: What’s the Connection?
Constipation and bloating often occur together. Slower transit can increase stool burden and give gas more time to accumulate, while attempts to fix constipation—especially rapid increases in fermentable fiber—can sometimes worsen bloating temporarily.

Why they overlap
When stool moves slowly, the abdomen may feel full or distended. Fermentation continues during transit, so gas can contribute as well. The relationship is real but does not mean all bloating is constipation.
The fiber paradox
Fiber can improve constipation, yet certain fibers also increase fermentation. That is why gradual titration and choosing the right fiber type can matter for someone who is both constipated and bloated.
A practical approach
Track stool frequency/consistency, meal patterns and symptom timing. Start with foundational measures and change one thing at a time when possible. If symptoms persist or are severe, seek evaluation.
