Stimulant Laxatives: How They Work & What to Know

Stimulant laxatives increase intestinal activity and can be effective for constipation in appropriate situations. Their mechanism is distinct from adding fiber or taking a probiotic, so supplement labels that include stimulant botanicals deserve careful reading.

What “stimulant” means

The term refers to stimulating intestinal motility and/or secretion. That can produce a bowel movement, but it does not explain why constipation occurred in the first place.

Where cascara fits

Cascara sagrada has a history as a botanical stimulant-laxative ingredient. FDA’s OTC rulemaking history is relevant context for interpreting supplements that include cascara even when the front label emphasizes general digestive support.

Why duration matters

Repeated self-treatment can mask a persistent problem. If you regularly need a stimulant to have bowel movements, discuss the pattern with a clinician rather than simply increasing use.
